Boston Seaport’s Humble Beginnings

In the 1800s the Boston Seaport was known as the Commonwealth Flats. Owned by the commonwealth of Massachusetts, it was a tidal marsh or large wetland area continually inundated with water. To create more space for a growing population and accommodate the shipping trade, the tidal marshes were filled by leveling hills turning the marshes into muddy patches where industrial wharves, railroad yards and warehouses were constructed. For years, the Boston Seaport served as the place for ships to unload fish.

A Slow Transformation

Though the Boston Seaport didn’t look like much, there were those that saw its potential. More revitalization took place in the 90s when the federal courthouse, the John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse, moved to the area and construction began on the Big Dig, and the Seaport became much more accessible by highway and public transportation.
